Another month, another list of amazing holidays and long weekends. In May, people observe some of the most significant events, including Labour Day.

The month will begin with Labour Day and Maharashtra Day on May 1. While Labour Day is meant to honour the dignity and respect of workers, Maharashtra Day will be celebrated to mark the foundation of the state of Maharashtra.

Another important event is the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. He also wrote India and Bangladesh’s National Anthems.

  • May 1: On this day, both May Day and Maharashtra Day will be celebrated.

  • May 3: World Press Freedom Day to highlight the importance of press freedom.

  • May 4: This day marks World Laughter Day to celebrate the importance of laughter in our lives. It also marks Coal Miners Day and International Firefighters’ Day.

  • May 6: World Asthma Day

  • May 7: World Athletics Day

  • May 8: World Red Cross and World Thalassaemia Day

  • May 9: It marks the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.

  • May 10: World Lupus Day seeks to raise awareness about lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease.

  • May 11: This day marks Mother's Day to honour mothers and maternal bonds. In India, National Technology Day is also celebrated on May 11.

  • May 12: International Nurses Day and Buddha Purnima. The latter marks the birth, enlightenment and passing of Gautama Buddha.

  • May 15: International Day of Families promotes awareness of issues relating to families.

  • May 16: Sikkim State Day 

  • May 17: World Hypertension Day

  • May 18: International Museum Day and World AIDS Vaccine Day

  • May 21: International Tea Day and World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development

  • May 22: International Day for Biological Diversity
