Google Maps has begun to roll out a feature that will help save travel planning time for iPhone users.

A screenshot saving and recognition capability has been introduced by Maps through which users can easily save a place for travel, with Maps easily locating places stored in your camera roll on the phone.

According to a blog post by Google, the "new feature uses Gemini capabilities to identify places in your screenshots and saves it for you".

As of now, the new screenshot feature will be activated on iOS devices only, and Google has not yet confirmed when it will be available on Android phones.

How Can Google Maps' Screenshot Scanning Feature Help?

Imagine taking screenshots of news stories, travel blogs or social network posts all the time for your intended travels of the future. It's a cumbersome task to track all these screenshots, feed those destinations in Google Maps and then go on with your journey.

Google Maps is leveraging Gemini AI to remove these troubles. Gemini's AI capability will identify location names in your screenshots and assist you in saving them to a list. So yes, the feature saves you from having to go back to your gallery of screenshots, remember the destination name and then open Maps to search for it.

How To Use Google Maps' Screenshot Feature

Here's how you can use the new screenshot feature on Google Maps:

  • On Maps, go to the You tab.

  • At the top of the You tab, a Screenshots list with a badge 'Try it out!' will show. This will open a demo video of how the feature works.

  • Allow Google Maps to access your photos when you get a prompt.

  • After taking a screenshot with the name of a place, go to Google Maps.

  • If Maps identifies the place, a pop-up notification will alert you about places ready for review.

  • Tap "review" and save the image to your screenshots list.

There is also an option to upload screenshots manually:

  • In Google Maps, choose the Screenshots list under the You tab and upload screenshots manually. The remaining process is the same.

  • You'll be able to see the saved places directly on your map or access them from the screenshots list through the You tab.
