Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta lifted a dusk-to-dawn curfew as the number of new coronavirus cases in the country fell.
Places of worship can also be filled to two-thirds of their capacity, double the previous limit, Kenyatta said Wednesday in a televised address.
The seven-day average of new infections in the East African nation has dropped to 117, from a peak of 1,305 three months ago. The curfew was first imposed in March last year to discourage people from socializing and ease pressure on hospital trauma wards.
More than 5 million Covid-19 vaccine doses have been issued in the country so far, against a target to vaccinate 10 million adults by Christmas, according to Kenyatta.
The government has set up a company called Kenya Biovax Ltd. to start local vaccine production by April, he said.
“If there is anything, we have learnt from the Covid-19 pandemic is the essence of self-reliance,” Kenyatta said.
He also announced stimulus measures for health, education and agriculture industries which should inject 25 billion shillings ($225 million) into the economy.
