The Supreme Court on Friday allowed the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences to conduct the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Post Graduate 2025 on Aug. 3, in a single shift.

The NEET PG 2025 was earlier scheduled to be conducted in two shifts on June 15.

Earlier, the NBE sought permission to shift the exam after the Supreme Court directed it to hold it in a single shift rather than two.

A bench of Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice Augustine George Masih said that the reasons cited by NBE appear to be bona fide. This came after the bench initially raised questions over the more than two months’ time sought to hold the examination, PTI reported.

Also, it was made clear by the apex court that no further time will be granted to conduct NEET PG 2025.

"An interim application has been filed seeking rescheduling of the NEET PG examination to August 3...Respondent No. 1 is permitted to hold the exam on August 3, 2025. No further extension shall be granted," read the court order.

The NBE stated that, as per the Supreme Court's May 30 order, the exam needs to be held in a single shift. For this, it needed 1,000 centers across 250 cities as well as 60,000 personnel, such as invigilators and security staff.

NBE's plea mentioned that it can hold the exam between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 3, as this was the earliest possible date given by its technology partner, Tata Consultancy Services Ltd.

On May 30, the Supreme Court stated that holding the exam in two shifts created "arbitrariness" in its opinion.

This comes after the NBEMS announced in March that the NEET PG 2025 will be conducted in two shifts, similar to the format of last year.

This left many aspirants concerned over potential differences in question paper difficulty levels that could affect the performance for some of them.

Last year, several candidates had raised doubts over the transparency in the results and the normalisation process.

The apex court was hearing the plea from a group of students, who stated that the exam was held in a single shift earlier, but the NBE introduced a change. They even sought the release of the answer key, response sheets, along with pre-normalised scores and normalised results.
