The Dharavi Social Mission conducted a large-scale eye check-up camp, providing free screenings to 3,000 Dharavi residents.
This initiative, the biggest of its kind in the area so far, took place at multiple venues, including the Dharavi Resource Centre, aiming to promote inclusive healthcare, a press release stated on Thursday.
Throughout March, the camp extended its reach across various sectors and communities in Dharavi. Around 83% of participants were diagnosed with refractive errors or presbyopia, with many unaware that a simple pair of glasses could significantly improve their daily lives.
Over 1,200 residents received prescription glasses on the spot, while more than 1,000 others were given reading glasses, the press release said.
Notably, 61% of beneficiaries were first-time eyewear users, emphasising the severe lack of access to essential eye care in this densely populated neighbourhood.
The initiative also highlighted many critical eye health issues. Over 190 residents were referred to hospitals for advanced care, with 60% of those suspected of suffering from severe cataracts or other complex vision impairments. Women accounted for 54% of all those screened, a significant number in a community where medical facilities often overlook female residents, the release stated.
An NMDPL spokesperson credited grassroots awareness campaigns and local volunteer support for the high participation rate.
"This is what people-centric transformation looks like," he said, adding: "We are not just changing the physical environment of Dharavi, we are also working to uplift lives in real, tangible ways."
