US Stock Markets Today: S&P 500 Opens Nearly Flat, Nasdaq Opens 0.16% Higher

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite opened 0.16% higher to 19,906.99 at the opening bell.

All three major US stock market indices opened mixed on Friday. The broader S&P 500 opened nearly flat at 6,076.32, while the Dow Jones slipped 0.07% at the opening bell.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite opened 0.16% higher at 19,906.99 at the opening bell.

Among the stocks that gained in early trade were Walmart Inc., Honeywell International Inc. and Coca-Cola Co. Stocks like American Express Co., Nike Inc. Cl B and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. dipped in the early minutes of trade.

Among the 11 S&P 500 sectoral indices, all but two were trading lower against the previous day's close. The gains were led by Communication Services and Information Technology.

“It is early days but nothing that President Donald Trump has said or done has caused a bad reaction in financial markets,” Chris Iggo at AXA Investment Managers told Bloomberg.

“Quite the contrary. It is paying to stay invested,” he said.

As the US market opened, spot gold was trading 0.99% higher at $2,782.14, and Brent crude oil was trading 0.15% lower at $78.17.

The Bloomberg Dollar Index fell 0.5%, with the British pound rising 0.7% to $1.2445 while the Japanese yen slipped 0.1% to 156.21 per dollar.

Bitcoin, the largest traded cryptocurrency, soared 2.4% to $105,577.76.
