Finance and Revenue Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey has been appointed as the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India for a three-year term.
Pandey is an 1987-batch IAS Officer of Odisha cadre and he took over as the principal secretary of the finance department in September 2016.
He has served as secretary in three departments. He led the Department of Investment & Public Asset Management from Oct. 24, 2019, the Department of Public Enterprises from Aug. 1, 2024, and the Department of Personnel and Training from Nov. 4, 2024. Both Dipam and the DPE are part of the Ministry of Finance.
He has held various key positions in the Union and Odisha governments. In the early stages of his career, he served as the executive director and managing director of Odisha State Finance Corp. and Odisha Small Industries Corp. respectively. He has also been the district collector of Sambalpur.
Centrally, he has served as deputy secretary in the Department of Commerce and a deputation to the Regional Office of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation.
Upon returning to state service, he held positions, such as special secretary, General Administration Department; transport commissioner; health secretary; and commissioner, Commercial Taxes.
He also worked in the Planning Commission for five years as a joint secretary and, subsequently, joined that cabinet secretariat for two years. His work has given him a diverse experience of several sectors, including financial management, industrial development, policymaking and more.
On the academic front, Pandey holds a Master's degree in Economics from the Panjab University in Chandigarh and also an MBA from the University of Birmingham.
He is going to be replacing the first woman chairperson of the market regulator, Madhabi Puri Buch, after her tenure of three years. Buch's time at SEBI is characterised by almost 180 consultation papers and a plethora of market reforms.
