India's benchmark stock indices posted a third consecutive session of losses on Thursday, as financial heavyweights HDFC Bank Ltd. and ICICI Bank Ltd. underperformed.
The NSE Nifty 50 ended 19.75 points or 0.09% lower at 22,913.15, while the BSE Sensex closed 203.22 points or 0.27% down at 75,735.96.
Intraday, Nifty fell 0.52% but stayed above the crucial support at 22,800, while Sensex lost 0.63% to slip below 75,500. The session also marked the weekly expiry for Nifty contracts.
Shares of HDFC Bank Ltd., ICICI Bank Ltd. and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. weighed on the Nifty 50.
While those of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., ITC Ltd. and NTPC Ltd. cushioned the fall.
On NSE, seven out of 12 sectors advanced, and the other five declined. The Nifty Finance and Nifty Bank fell the most, and the Nifty Metal and Nifty Energy rose the most.
Broader markets ended higher. The BSE Midcap ended up 1.18% and the BSE Smallcap advanced 1.32%.
On BSE, four out of 21 sectors declined. The BSE Metal and BSE Utilities advanced the most by over 2%, and the BSE Bankex fell the most.
Market breadth was skewed in the favour of sellers. In total, 2,673 stocks declined, 1,268 stocks advanced, and 113 stocks remained unchanged on the BSE.
