Chirag Paswan has won by a margin of 1,70,105 votes, after securing 6,15,718 votes in the Hajipur constituency in Bihar. Rashtriya Janata Dal's Shiv Chandra Ram obtained 4,45,613 votes, according to data by the Election Commission of India.
Paswan—son of former Union minister, the late Ram Vilas Paswan—was contesting as Lok Janshakti Party-Ram Vilas candidate of the National Democratic Alliance, against Ram of Rashtriya Janata Dal of the INDIA bloc.
Paswan looks to take his father's legacy ahead; Ram Vilas Paswan won eight times from this constituency.
Ram Vilas' younger brother Pashupati Kumar Paras was victorious in Hajipur in 2019.
Hajipur in Bihar—reserved for the Schedule Caste—went for polling in the fifth phase and saw a 58.43% voter turnout. In 2019, the voter turnout dropped to 55.26%.
Paras won in 2019 by defeating Shiv Chandra Ram from the RJD, with a vote difference of 2.06 lakh.
NDA leads with 292 seats, while the INDIA bloc is also giving a strong fight with 232 seats in their kitty.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP, seeking a third term in power, is confident of making big gains besides holding on to its traditional strongholds. On the other hand, the opposition INDIA bloc, in which parties with different ideologies have come together against the BJP, insists that exit polls are off the mark.
