The government will launch the 11th round of commercial auctions of coal on Dec. 5, with a total of 27 blocks across India open for bidding. This will include 10 fully explored and 10 partially explored blocks, the Ministry of Coal said on Wednesday.
Additionally, seven coal mines from the second attempt of round 10 will also be available, comprising four fully explored and three partially explored blocks. All these mines contain non-coking coal, supporting India's growing energy demands.
Furthermore, during the event, the government will execute Coal Mine Development and Production Agreements and Coal Block Development and Production Agreements for nine coal mines.
These mines are projected to generate annual revenue of approximately Rs 1,446 crores at peak-rated capacity and create around 19,063 employment opportunities. Additionally, CBDPs will be handed over to the successful bidders of the 10th tranche conducted in June, the statement said.
India produced 537.56 million tonnes of coal in the 2024-25 financial year up to October, aiming to achieve a target of 1,080 million tonnes for the whole year. In the previous fiscal, coal production was 997.8 MT.
Even as the country ramps up its renewable energy capacity, the government is going big on new coal projects amid continued dependency on the fossil fuel to meet rising power demand.
The Ministry of Coal has allocated 175 coal blocks across different states and regions of India, of which 65 have received mine opening permissions. Among these, 54 are presently operational, Union Minister of Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha last week.
Coal India Ltd. has announced plans to develop 36 new coal projects over the next five years to boost production capacity.
