As 2024 draws to a close, Swiggy Instamart, one of India’s leading quick commerce platforms, has unveiled some of the most fascinating, quirky, and high-ticket trends that define how the nation shopped for essentials and more in record time. Among the most surprising insights? One user’s extravagant Rs 8.3 lakh Dhanteras gold purchase and 307 roses ordered per minute on Valentine's Day.

These trends, and much more, show the ever-growing appetite for instant gratification, with people across the country leaning more than ever into the convenience of having everything from groceries to luxury items delivered in a matter of minutes.

The most eye-catching trend for 2024 was the record-breaking gold purchase made by a single Swiggy Instamart user from Ahmedabad during Dhanteras who ordered Rs 8.3 lakh worth of gold coins. Gold, however, wasn’t the only indulgence on the platform. Other lavish spends included over Rs 20 lakh in grocery and home essentials, with customers in Delhi and Dehradun leading the charge.

February 14th, Valentine’s Day, saw 307 roses ordered per minute, making romance the most popular emotion of the day. Swiggy Instamart also delivered 2.85 lakh chocolates, and close to 8 lakh rakhis for Raksha Bandhan—truly a festival of convenience! The rise of digital and fast deliveries during festive times underscores the evolving consumer behavior, where impulse buying is as easy as hitting the order now button.

Swiggy Instamart also took note of late-night cravings, with orders spiking for chips, ice cream, and cold drinks between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. But the real surprise? Stealthy shoppers taking advantage of the late hour to purchase flavored condoms and chips in near-secret mode. Cities like Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru saw the highest activity during this time.

India's demand for speed has never been clearer. Bengaluru emerged as the country’s go-to city for puja essentials and party supplies.

Mumbai also earned the title of the Maximum City for its insatiable need for tonic water, with one user spending over Rs 8.2 lakh on the drink alone.

As for tech-savvy shoppers, a Chennai user spent more than Rs 1.25 lakh on electronics and appliances, purchasing items like gaming earphones, smartwatches, and kitchen gadgets via the 10-minute delivery service.

The holiday season saw surprising purchases across various categories. Onions were in high demand in early December, with 4,500 kg of onions ordered between 7 and 8 p.m. on December 1. In October, during the monsoon, Mumbai ordered the highest number of umbrellas and raincoats.

One of the most interesting trends in 2024 was international shoppers who logged in from countries like Canada, the United States, and Singapore to place orders for loved ones in India. The most common requests? Milk, dosa batter, and water – simple essentials bridging distances.

One of the fastest deliveries recorded this year was in Kochi, where an order of bananas and amaranthus was delivered in just 89 seconds. Meanwhile, eco-conscious shoppers in Hyderabad and Bengaluru embraced the “Deliver Without Bag” option, showing that convenience doesn’t have to come at the cost of the planet.
