Tata Trusts which controls 66 per cent of the shares of Tata Sons, the holding Tata Company, on Sunday announced that it has entered into a partnership to support US-based non-profit organisation Khan Academy for providing free online education to people across India.
Khan Academy is an American online education provider founded and run by Salman Khan, a former hedge fund analyst. Tata Trusts is a philanthropic arm of the Tata Group.
Ratan Tata, chairman, Tata Trusts however did not specify the aggregate value of resources which will be granted to Khan Academy during the five-year partnership.
"What the Khan Academy has created is a concept which provides free education and knowledge to anybody, anywhere. Therefore, for me, as an Indian and as a citizen on this planet, it's a great privilege. I look at this as a great opportunity where we will do something to create a difference for generations," Ratan Tata said.
The hedge fund analyst-turned-founder of Khan Academy, the US-based Salman Khan, said that Indian students already use the academy's content but it is now in the process of creating specialised content in English and Hindi for the benefit of India, one of the youngest nations in the world.
Tata Trusts has been supporting education for over a century now, which involves giving grants, providing scholarships for students going abroad for studies, Salman Khan said.
Khan Academy's Indian content will be mapped to the standards set by the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT), and work around subtitling and translation of video tutorials has already started, Salman Khan said.
It will play a complementary role to the existing education system, Mr Khan added.
Salman Khan said content will also be produced in regional languages soon but it will stick to mathematics and science.
