State-owned hydropower company NHPC Ltd. is targeting a profit of Rs 4,500 crore in FY26, led by the commissioning of the Parbati-II and increased power generation at Parbati-III projects in Himachal Pradesh, according to the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), Raj Kumar Chaudhary.
“With the commissioning of the Parbati-II 800 MW, the generation of Parbati 3 will also be augmented by 1,100 million units per annum. Profitability will certainly be Rs 4,500 crore around with the commissioning of the Parbati-II and the Parbati-III energy generation augmentation and the commissioning of the Subansiri Lower,” he said during a conversation with NDTV Profit on Monday.
“We are expecting that revenue will increase by around Rs 3,000 crore in the current fiscal, compared to FY25,” he added.
NHPC currently has an installed capacity of 8,194 MW and wants to increase it by three times by 2032. Hydropower capacity will surpass 15,000 MW by 2030, according to the CMD.
“By 2032, yes, NHPC will achieve the installed capacity of more than 23,000 MW. By 2029-30 itself, the hydro capacity will be more than 15,000 MW,” he said.
By 2027, NHPC expects to add 5,000 MW, including 3,000 MW from hydro and 1,600 MW from solar. It will bring its total capacity to 14,000 MW.
Chaudhary highlighted NHPC’s dominant position in India’s hydropower sector. It accounts for over 67% of all ongoing projects, with an 8,514 MW portfolio under construction.
Key projects include the 120 MW Rangit-IV hydropower project, set for commissioning by December 2025 and the 2,880 MW Dibang project. NHPC has a robust pipeline of pumped storage schemes totalling over 19,000 MW in various stages of development across eight states.
The public sector company is also working on the 1,856 MW Sawalkot hydroelectric project in Jammu and Kashmir. The construction work for the project will commence soon.
Reflecting on India’s energy transition, Chaudhary praised the country’s progress towards its renewable energy targets.
“The energy transition in the country is going very well. By May 2025, we achieved 227 GW installed capacity from renewable energy sources. And our target is by 2030, 500 GW. So, it's going well and we are confident that we will be able to achieve this,” he said.
Shares of NHPC Ltd. were trading 0.15% lower at Rs 85.42 apiece on the NSE at 12:45 a.m. on Monday, compared to a 0.37% decline in benchmark Nifty50 at 25,543.6.
