Idea Cellular Jumps 3% on Strong Q4 Earnings

Shares of Idea Cellular rose nearly 3.5 per cent to a day high of Rs 198 after the telecom operator reported strong fourth quarter earnings, helped by higher data revenue and strong subscriber growth.

Idea Cellular's revenues in the quarter ended March 31, 2015, rose to Rs 8,422 crore, up 5 per cent from the December quarter. Its profit in the fourth quarter jumped 22 per cent sequentially to Rs 941 crore.

The gross profit margin rose to an all-time high of 36.4 per cent in the March quarter, against 34.3 per cent sequentially.

Idea's operating profit was ahead of estimates as network operating costs declined despite adding 4,983 cell sites, mainly due to lower fuel costs, investment bank CLSA said in a note.

Idea reported an EBITDA, or operating profit, of Rs 3,064.5 crore in the March quarter, against Rs 2,752.7 crore sequentially. Its subscriber base rose to 157.8 million in March quarter, against 150.5 million sequentially.

In the March quarter, average revenue per user was flat sequentially at Rs 179 while average realization per minute fell to 44.80 paise, against 46.30 paise. However, Idea's data ARPU (average revenue per user) rose to Rs 150 in March quarter, against Rs 126 sequentially.

At 11:19 a.m., Idea shares were down 3 per cent on profit-taking at Rs 184 as compared to a 0.60 per cent fall in Nifty.
