BSNL and MTNL have generated a total of Rs 12,984.86 crore through the sale of their assets since 2019, Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar informed Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
Among the assets that the state-owned telecom firms sold were land, buildings, tower and fibre.
Giving a breakup of the sale, Sekhar said that while BSNL received Rs 2,387.82 crore via monetisation of lands and buildings, MTNL made Rs 2,134.61 crore up to January 2025.
However, in a written reply, Sekhar clarified, "BSNL and MTNL are monetising only those land and building assets that are not required for their own use in the foreseeable future and for which they have the rights to transfer the ownership."
BSNL has earned Rs 8,204.18 crore and MTNL Rs 258.25 crore from monetisation of close assets comprising tower and fibre up to January 2025, according to the reply.
"Monetisation of assets is being done as per the approved policy of the government, and its impact on the PSUs is being monitored closely," said Sekhar.
