Iran has appointed Ayatollah Alireza Arafi to its interim Leadership Council following the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a reported US–Israel joint strike.

The Expediency Discernment Council has elected Arafi as a member of the three-member interim body tasked with assuming the Supreme Leader's duties until a permanent successor is chosen. This was confirmed by Expediency Council spokesman Mohsen Dehnavi in a post on X.

Under Iran's constitutional mechanism, the provisional council comprises President Masoud Pezeshkian, Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, and a cleric from the Guardian Council, a role now filled by Arafi. The Assembly of Experts is required to elect a permanent leader “as soon as possible”, but until then, the council will collectively exercise the powers of the Supreme Leader.

Who Is Ayatollah Alireza Arafi?

Born in 1959, Arafi, 67, is regarded as a senior and influential figure within Iran's religious establishment. Prior to his emergency elevation, he simultaneously held three powerful positions: Director of Iran's Islamic Seminary system, member of the Assembly of Experts, and jurist member of the Guardian Council, the constitutional watchdog that vets legislation and electoral candidates.

Deeply rooted in the clerical networks of Qom, Iran's theological centre, Arafi is seen as a regime insider with strong institutional credibility. However, he is also viewed as more academically inclined than overtly political. A polyglot fluent in Arabic and English, he previously headed Al-Mustafa International University, an institution that promotes Iran's religious outreach abroad.

His presence on both the Guardian Council and the Assembly of Experts places him at the centre of the succession framework, giving him influence not only in managing the transition but potentially shaping the choice of the next Supreme Leader.

Khamenei's Death And The Transition Phase

Khamenei, 87, who had ruled Iran since 1989, was reportedly killed in a US–Israeli strike at his office on Saturday. US President Donald Trump announced the death on X, calling it “justice” for victims of the Iranian regime. Iran initially denied reports of his death before officially confirming them on Sunday morning.

The killing marks the most dramatic leadership rupture in Iran since the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989. The interim council arrangement is designed to prevent a power vacuum while the Assembly of Experts deliberates on a successor.
