Magnitude 6.7 Earthquake Strikes Off Southern Philippines; Authorities Assessing Impact

Less than three weeks ago another earthquake in the same region had claimed 80 lives.

An earthquake with 6.7 magnitude hit southern Philippines on Friday evening, less than three weeks after another quake in the same region claimed over 80 lives. 

Acccording to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) the calamity struck at 7:42 p.m. local time (1142 GMT) at a depth of 65.7 kilometres, about 21 kilometres southwest of Sarangani town on the southern island of Mindanao.

There were no immediate tsunami warnings, reports of casualties or any significant damage following the incident, though authorities were still the impact.

The latest tremor follows a major earthquake in southern Philippines that occurred earlier this month, killing over 80 people and causing widespread destruction across parts of Mindanao.

The Philippines lies along the Pacific "Ring of Fire", a belt of intense seismic and volcanic activity that stretches around the Pacific Ocean, making earthquakes very frequent in the country.

This marks the second major natural calamity to happen in the span of two days. On Thursday, Venezuela was struck by twin earthquakes, which left nearly 600 people dead and injured nearly 3,000.

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck near San Felipe, about 284 kilometres west of Caracas, followed almost immediately by a magnitude 7.5 quake near Yumare, about 293 kilometres west of the capital, according to the US Geological Survey. The two quakes struck roughly 40 seconds apart.
