Prominent writers and actors, along with Disney+ subscribers, have called for a boycott of the streaming service after the suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel's show.

Prominent writers and actors, along with Disney+ subscribers, have called for a boycott of the streaming service after the suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel's show.
ABC suspended talk show host Jimmy Kimmel indefinitely over remarks about right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk's killing. Kimmel said the "Maga gang" aimed to score political points from the shooting.
“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang trying to characterize this kid who killed Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them,” Kimmel said in his Sept. 15 monologue.
The comments inflamed many conservative commentators and brought a rebuke from members of the Trump administration. While Kimmel is known for his satirical and often biting humor, these jokes from the talk show host were not well-received by the company.
It was reported that Kimmel had been suspended from his hosting duties. The decision has sparked a significant backlash from a wide range of professionals in the entertainment industry. Key figures in the creative community, including screenwriter Damon Lindelof and actress Tatiana Maslany, have publicly criticised the move, raising concerns about creative freedom and corporate control over content.
Concerns Over Creative Freedom
Screenwriter Damon Lindelof, known for his work on shows like Lost and The Leftovers, was among the first to voice his disapproval. Lindelof shared his frustration on social media, suggesting that the company's action was a dangerous precedent for censorship and artistic expression.
Similarly, actress Tatiana Maslany, who stars in the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, also joined the chorus of criticism. Maslany used her platform to highlight the importance of allowing creators to express themselves freely, even if it means challenging the very corporations they work for.
Subscriber Backlash and Boycott Calls
The protests are not limited to industry insiders. A number of Disney+ subscribers have also taken to social media to express their discontent. The hashtag #CancelDisneyPlus has gained traction, with users threatening to cancel their subscriptions in solidarity with Kimmel and the principle of creative independence.
Many subscribers argue that Disney's decision goes against its own brand values, which often celebrate bold and imaginative storytelling. This public reaction highlights a growing tension between a company's corporate image and its audience's expectations for authentic, unfiltered content.
