Australia's center-left Labor government is on track to win a national election just one week out from a vote on May 3, according to new polling, with Opposition Leader Peter Dutton's net approval rating falling to its lowest on record.
Labor is currently ahead of the Liberal-National Coalition opposition by 52% to 48%, according to a Newspoll survey published in The Australian on Sunday, the same lead it has maintained since early April.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has held his lead over Dutton as the country's preferred prime minister, by 51% to 35%, while the opposition leader's net approval rating has fallen two percentage points to -24%. That's Dutton's worst result since he took over after the Coalition lost power at the 2022 election. Albanese's net approval has remained at -9%.
If the polls are correct, Labor is likely to win enough seats to either form a government in its own right, or hold power with the support of minority parties and independents.
However with one week left in the 2025 election campaign, polls show Labor's momentum has stabilized. In addition, with a large number of unpredictable contests in the 150 seats in Australia's lower house of Parliament, Albanese's party is cautious about claiming victory too soon.
Albanese is campaigning to become the first Australian prime minister in more than two decades to win consecutive elections, hoping to draw a line under the country's years of political instability which have threatened to undermine its economic success.
The 2025 election campaign has been dominated by Australians' cost-of-living concerns, following three years of persistent inflation, high interest rates and a national housing crisis. Both Labor and the Coalition have pledged policies to help first home buyers and provide relief for taxpayers if they win the election.
