Canadian author Anne Carson won the Nobel prize In Literature 2026, according to an 'X' post from the The Nobel Prize's offical account on Thursday.

Carson is best known for using Greek and Roman mythological figures and stories for experimental and contemporary narratives. Her most prominent works include Eros The Bittersweet (1986), a book of criticism that explores the Ancient Greek concept of 'Eros' or desire via philosophy and poetry.

The crux of the work revolves around the definition for desire as conceptualised by the poet Sappho who described it as 'glukupikron' or 'bittersweet', emphasising it not as the fulfilment of love but the 'ache of lack' or missing that desired person's presence.

"With its brilliantly rendered meditation on Eros being the essence and driving force of the poem, the book draws heavily on a compound adjective from Sappho that defines Eros as pain and sweetness combined. It is this distinction, the distance between the lover and the beloved, that gives Eros strength and sets the poem in motion," The Nobel Prize website said.

Carson is also known for Autobiography Of Red (1998) which is a reimagining of the Ancient Greek poem Geryoneis which is about the Greek hero Heracles (popularly known by his Roman name Hercules) and his battle with the red-winged monster Geryon whom he kills, after which he steals his cattle.

Carson reimagined Geryon as a gay teenager with wings who falls for Heracles, who ends up breaking his heart.

"While the myth describes how Heracles, in fulfilling one of his labours, kills Geryon and steals his cattle, Carson recasts the terrifying giant as a tender ‘hero' devoted to his mother, in what becomes a modern Bildungsroman," The Nobel Prize website stated.

Her work Nox (2010) written in memory of her brother Micheal was widely celebrated by critics. Nox was a multi-media book, which has collage elements and an accordion-fold design.

"An unforgettable work of Carson's is Nox (2010), written in memory of her brother Michael, who was mysteriously absent prior to his death in Denmark in 2000. Palpable here is a deep sense of loss that works its way up from below,"  The Nobel Prize website said.

Anne Carson was born in 1950 in Toronto, Canada. Outside of being an author, she is also a poet, essayist, translator, classicist, and professor. Carson has taught classics, comparative literature, and creative writing at universities across the US and Canada  since 1979, such as McGill, University of Michigan, New York University, and Princeton University.
