Good Friday is a Christian holiday that remembers the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is observed on the Friday before Easter Sunday. This year, Good Friday falls on April 18, followed by Easter Sunday on April 20.

Easter Sunday, also known as Resurrection Sunday, falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, a pivotal event in Christianity symbolising hope, renewal, and triumph over evil. The resurrection affirms Jesus' divinity and validates his prophecies.

Christians see Good Friday as a day of sorrow and reflection as they remember the teachings of their religious leader.

Believers of Jesus have marked this day with prayer, fasting, and quiet worship. Many might wonder that if the day is meant to mark the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, why is it called “Good Friday”?

The reason behind this is that it is believed that Jesus’ sacrifice was for the salvation of humanity. It reflects that Jesus died to save humanity. In some languages such as German, "Good Friday" is called "Karfreitag," which means "Sorrowful Friday."

On this day, churches often hold special services. Some people choose to perform acts of charity to mark the day while maintaining a subdued atmosphere.

Some theories also suggest that Good Friday was originally observed as "God’s Friday". Over time, the name may have changed due to language evolution and pronunciation.

According to the Vatican City’s website, the day celebrates the "passion of the Lord". According to Christian beliefs, Jesus was crucified because he was seen as a threat by the then-religious leaders. However, Christians also believe that Jesus did not only die for political reasons, but it was also a part of God's plan. Accused of blasphemy, Jesus was nailed to a cross at a location outside Jerusalem called Golgotha.

Good Friday is also referred to as Holy Friday or Black Friday, reflecting its significance as a sacred and solemn occasion in the Christian faith. The crucifixion is considered a pivotal moment in Christian theology, symbolizing the ultimate sacrifice for the salvation of humanity.

On this day, India also observes a public holiday in many states. The central government maintains Good Friday as a gazetted holiday, which means that it is an official public holiday. Hence, schools and educational establishments, government offices, banks, stock exchanges, and other institutions remain closed on this day.

States such as Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Goa, and Kerala among others observe Good Friday as a significant religious holiday. These states have a notable Christian population, and the day is marked with church services, prayers, and processions.
