Samsung is set to expand its flagship Galaxy S series with a new high-end addition. The upcoming Galaxy S27 series, scheduled for release next year, will include a 'Pro' model alongside the Standard, Plus and Ultra variants, according to a new report.
Korean news portal ET News reported that the Pro version will become the second high-end model in the lineup, complementing the existing Ultra. While it will share most of the Ultra's technologies, the Pen functionality will not be included.
"The plan is to increase the number of high-end models from just the Ultra to two by adding the Pro model. While detailed specifications such as screen size have not yet been finalised, it has been decided to release a high-end model that excludes the Pen functionality from the Ultra while sharing most other technologies," an industry insider familiar with the plans told the outlet.
As per the report, Samsung is planning to bring the Privacy Display to a second model in the next-generation Galaxy S27 series. Following the strong positive response to the feature in the S26 Ultra, the newly added Pro model might also include it.
This marks the first time in two years that Samsung has added a new model to the Galaxy S series. Previously, the Galaxy S25 Edge was introduced shortly after the official S25 launch to emphasise "thinness” but plans to replace the Plus model were later scrapped in favour of continuing the Plus variant.
Unlike the Edge, the Galaxy S27 Pro is being added to strengthen the lineup rather than replace an existing model. The Pro model will stand out from the Standard and Plus variants by including technologies that are unique to Samsung's high-end devices such as the Privacy Display and a 200-megapixel camera.
Samsung's effort aligns more closely with Apple's strategy of offering multiple premium models. While Apple has both standard (Standard and Air) and high-end (Pro and Pro Max) iPhones, Samsung has historically relied on a single Ultra model to serve the high-end segment. With the Pro model, the company is now moving towards a multi-tier approach for its premium lineup.
The expanded range also raises questions about how Samsung will position itself in the conventional bar-style smartphone market especially after the company's strong performance with foldable devices.
