A speech-impaired man used a Neuralink brain implant to tell his partner, “I love you,” in a demonstration of how brain-computer technology could help people with severe speech disabilities communicate.

Neuralink, Elon Musk's brain-implant company, shared a short video showing the clinical trial participant communicating with his partner through the experimental technology.

The system decoded neural signals linked to his intended speech and converted them into audible words using artificial intelligence.

The moment drew attention online after Musk reshared the video on X with the words “I love you.” Neuralink described the demonstration as a “beautiful surprise.”

The participant's identity and detailed medical condition have not been publicly disclosed.

The demonstration is part of Neuralink's work on using brain-computer interfaces to help people who have lost the ability to speak. The technology is designed to record neural activity associated with intended speech or movement and use software to translate those signals into commands or spoken language.

Neuralink currently has an active clinical trial investigating whether brain signals can be used to decode intended speech in people with severe speech impairment caused by conditions including ALS, stroke and spinal cord injury.

The latest demonstration follows an earlier Neuralink experiment involving a participant named Kenneth, who was also shown using the technology for communication.

Neuralink's broader brain-computer interface programme remains in the clinical-trial stage. In January, the company said 21 participants were enrolled in its trials worldwide.

Its first publicly demonstrated patient used the implant to perform tasks such as playing video games, browsing the internet and controlling a computer cursor through thought.

Neuralink has said it is working with regulators and hospitals to improve the technology and reported no serious device-related adverse events among its participants at the time.

The company's speech-restoration technology remains investigational and is not yet available as a general public treatment.
