From UPI Success To 5G Rollout: PM Modi Reflects On 10 Years Of Digital India Initiative
PM Modi highlighted India’s digital economy, empowering MSMEs through platforms like the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and Government E-Marketplace (GeM).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday shared a blog reflecting on 10 years of Digital India, an initiative launched in 2015. He highlighted how it has transformed India’s digital landscape, driving tech revolutions across sectors. From leading in real-time digital payments to 5G rollouts and AI advancements, the initiative has bridged gaps and empowered citizens, PM Modi outlined in a post on LinkedIn.
“When the intent is right, innovation empowers the less empowered. When the approach is inclusive, technology brings change in the lives of those on the margins,” PM Modi said in an official press release.
Reflecting on 2014, when internet access was limited and digital literacy was low, PM Modi noted that today there are no doubts about India’s ability to go digital.
“Today, that question has been answered not just in data and dashboards, but in the lives of 140 crore Indians. From how we govern, to how we learn, transact and build, Digital India is everywhere,” he said.
Highlighting the impact of the initiative through some figures, PM Modi said that today, over 42 lakh kilometres of Optical Fibre Cable connect India. This is equivalent to 11 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon. From 25 crore in 2014, today there are 97 crore internet connections in India.
“High-speed internet now reaches urban hubs and forward military posts alike, including Galwan, Siachen and Ladakh,” PM Modi added.
He also highlighted the success of UPI in India, noting that it now handles over 100 billion transactions annually.
“Through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), over Rs 44 lakh crore has been transferred directly to citizens, cutting out middlemen and saving Rs 3.48 lakh crore in leakages. Schemes like SVAMITVA have issued 2.4 crore+ property cards and mapped 6.47 lakh villages, ending years of land-related uncertainty,” the post mentioned.
PM Modi highlighted India’s digital economy, empowering MSMEs through platforms like the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and Government E-Marketplace (GeM).
“ONDC recently crossed 200 million transactions, with the last 100 million in just six months. From Banarasi weavers to bamboo artisans in Nagaland, sellers are now reaching customers nationwide, without middlemen or digital monopolies,” he said.
PM Modi noted that India’s Digital Public Infrastructure, such as Aadhaar, CoWIN and DigiLocker, is now studied globally. Concluding his blog, PM Modi said the next decade will bring even greater transformation.
“Let us lead with technology that unites, includes and uplifts,” he said.
