Google has unveiled a sweeping upgrade to its autonomous research agents, introducing two new offerings aimed at broadening developer capabilities. Revealed on Monday, Deep Research and Deep Research Max allow seamless integration of open internet data with proprietary business information through a unified API.
The enhancements further include native visualisation features such as charts and infographics, as well as connectivity to a wide range of third-party data sources using the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
“With the integration of our most advanced model, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Deep Research has transformed from a sophisticated summarisation engine into a foundation for enterprise workflows across finance, life sciences, market research, and more. Deep Research's reports offer value on their own, but also serve as the first step in complex, agentic pipelines which often start with in-depth context gathering. With a single API call, developers can now trigger exhaustive research workflows that for the first time blend the open web with their proprietary data streams to deliver professional-grade, fully cited analyses,” Google said in a blog post.

Select The Best Research Mode For Your Workflow
Following the debut of Gemini Deep Research, two new agents have been introduced to cater to a broader range of requirements, spanning real-time user assistance and large-scale research conducted in offline settings:
Deep Research: Engineered for faster performance, the updated agent replaces the December preview and brings notable gains in both cost efficiency and response times, alongside enhanced quality. It is best deployed in interactive environments where quick, responsive research capabilities are required.
Deep Research Max: Focused on delivering the most thorough and high-quality insights, the system harnesses longer processing cycles to iteratively reason and improve its findings. It is ideally deployed in asynchronous environments, for instance, in automated overnight tasks that produce in-depth due diligence briefs for analysts.
Using Proprietary Data And Rich Native Visuals
Deep Research can now pull information from diverse inputs such as web content, external MCP servers, uploaded documents and connected storage platforms, whether used together or selectively. The enhancement targets the layered and restricted data ecosystems commonly encountered in professional settings.
Model Context Protocol (MCP) support: The update enables Deep Research to integrate securely with custom data sources and professional-grade feeds, such as those used in finance and market analysis. By accommodating a wide range of tool configurations, the platform moves beyond simple web queries to operate as an independent agent within complex data environments.
Native charts and infographics: The latest update introduces built-in visualisation capabilities to Deep Research on the Gemini API, allowing it to generate charts and infographics alongside written content. These visuals, rendered in HTML or Nano Banana, are designed to bring clarity to complex data in research reports.
Top-Notch Analysis
With a focus on depth and reliability, Deep Research Max produces highly detailed analyses while reducing both cost and processing demands. In contrast to the December iteration, it consults a much wider array of references and is more adept at capturing critical subtleties. It has also been trained to assess conflicting information with greater care, resulting in balanced reports built on authoritative data sources, including regulatory filings and scholarly research, and presented in a clear, decision-ready manner.
In a bid to ensure real-world applicability, Google has been engaging with startups and established enterprises in sectors where even minor errors can have serious consequences, including finance and life sciences. It is also partnering with FactSet, S&P Global and PitchBook to refine MCP server designs, helping clients integrate financial datasets into Deep Research systems and dramatically improve the speed and depth of contextual analysis.
