The latest iOS 26.4 update for iPhone was released by Apple on Tuesday, representing the fourth significant upgrade to the operating system unveiled in September. Among the new features are 'Playlist Playground', immersive full-screen backgrounds in Apple Music, support for AirPods Max 2, and a set of eight new emojis.

The update does not yet include the expected Apple Intelligence enhancements, including a more advanced Siri.

iOS 26.4 brings a significant update to Apple Music, introducing Playlist Playground as a key highlight. Apple notes that the feature relies on artificial intelligence to generate playlists from prompts provided by users. Whether describing a mood or a specific occasion, users can receive customised tracklists, complete with titles and descriptions. It is presently in beta testing.

The update also introduces a new Ambient Music widget, offering curated playlists for Sleep, Chill, Productivity and Wellbeing directly on the Home Screen. Apple has further enhanced the listening experience by adding full-screen artwork to album and playlist pages within Apple Music.

Here's a breakdown of the top 11 features from the update:

  • Playlist Playground: Apple Music can now build personalised playlists from user prompts describing mood, activity or genre, with no subscription needed.
  • Live Translation: Messages in other languages are translated automatically into the user's chosen language, now covering 17 languages.
  • Video Podcasts: Apple Podcasts gains support for HLS video, debuting with a robust catalogue of shows and partners.
  • Hold Assist: Users are notified as soon as a human agent answers a call, with expanded support for additional languages and regions.
  • Ambient Music widgets: Curated playlists for Sleep, relaxation, productivity and wellbeing can be pinned to the Home Screen or Today View.
  • Genius Browse: Apple TV introduces smarter recommendations based on viewing habits, allowing users to explore similar content easily.
  • Apple News enhancements: Recipes now feature conversions, ratings and nutrition data, while local news access broadens and F1 coverage deepens.
  • Freeform updates: Apple Creator Studio integrates new AI tools, including enhanced image quality, cropping features and generative capabilities.
  • Sleep insights: The Health app now benchmarks nightly sleep against a two-week average.
  • New emoji: Eight additional emoji have been introduced, including an orca and a ballet dancer.
  • Safety reporting: The “Report to Apple” feature expands geographically, allowing more users to flag harmful content.

According to PhoneArena, iOS 26.4 is not a sweeping upgrade. However, it does emerge as one of the more significant releases Apple has delivered of late. Playlist Playground is expected to attract casual Apple Music users, and the arrival of video podcast support helps close a gap that had become increasingly noticeable.
