Ahead of the iPhone 18 launch, a new rumour has emerged about its camera specifications. Apple is reportedly working to improve the camera on the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models. The US tech giant is exploring the use of a teleconverter to increase the focal length and zoom capabilities, according to a report by the Wccftech website.
The report cited tipster Smart Pikachu, who shared that Apple already has a working prototype of a variable aperture lens for the iPhone 18 series. The company continues to test teleconverters to see how they could enhance photography on the new devices. Smart Pikachu shared these details in a post on Weibo.
A teleconverter is a type of magnifying lens that increases a camera's effective focal length, giving stronger zoom. However, it reduces the amount of light reaching the sensor, which can affect performance in low-light conditions.

Earlier rumours already indicated that the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models will feature a variable aperture lens, allowing finer control over light and depth of field. Now, for the first time, reports suggest that the iPhone 18 series may also support a DSLR-style teleconverter. This is expected to attract users seeking higher-quality, long-range shots on their smartphones.
Smart Pikachu is known for accurate leaks on Android devices. However, it is not the most reliable source for Apple-related leaks, according to the Wccftech report.
There are concerns that the time remaining until the iPhone 18 Pro release may not be enough for full testing. Given Apple's history of ensuring rigorous tests for any new camera technology before launch, fans are sceptical about the possibility of a DSLR-style teleconverter appearing on the latest iPhone series.
In a separate report, The Verge noted that Apple will try to keep iPhone 18 prices stable despite a global memory shortage. According to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans to “absorb the costs” of rising RAM prices to avoid increasing the device's starting price.
