Foldable smartphones are very much around and Samsung has put in years of hard work on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Flip handsets. Other smartphone manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon including Google, Tecno, Xiaomi, Motorola and more. However, the first-generation Apple foldable iPhone is still work-in-progress. It may be late to the party, but Apple is pulling out all the stops to roll one out. However, as with all things Apple, it will cost you. The latest Apple foldable iPhone price leak by reputed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests, it may cost anything between $2,000 to $2,500.

The Apple foldable iPhone is expected to have a book-style design with larger screens that will enable users to undertake simultaneous and separate actions on both screens as well as enable the use of Apple Intelligence. "Larger screens enhance the AI experience, enabling scenarios like chatting with a chatbot about travel plans while viewing a full map app simultaneously."

Kuo described it as a "true" AI-driven phone. Multimodal functionality and cross-app integration are the trends in AI device use cases, he added.

Kuo said that the phone will have a Touch ID feature, accessible via a side button. However, it may not have a Face ID due to thickness and internal space constraints.

The foldable iPhone will most likely have a crease-free inner display of about 7.5 inches and an outer display measuring approximately 5.5 inches.

The camera is anticipated to be a dual-lens setup, with a front-facing camera in both folded and unfolded states.

Its thickness when folded is expected to be 9 to 9.5 mm and 4.5 to 4.8 mm when unfolded.

The hinges are projected to combine stainless steel and titanium alloy, with the casing using titanium alloy.

Kuo said the phone will use high-density battery cells as seen in the ultra-thin iPhone 17 smartphone series.

He expects the final specs to be determined by the second quarter of calendar year 2025, with the official project kickoff time period estimated as being from July to September of 2025, and it is anticipated to commence mass production in October to December of 2026.

The second generation of foldables will likely enter mass production in the second half of 2027.

According to Kuo, the foldable is expected to create a strong demand from iPhone users for replacement despite its high pricing, citing Apple's brand loyalty among customers and its status symbol factor. However, this may not be the case if its quality fails to meet expectations.

Shipments of the phone are expected to be at three to five million units for 2026.

Kuo also stated that Apple won't be able to make a large quantity of foldable iPhones until 2027 due to the complexity of its design. Until then, production will be restricted.

The total number of foldable iPhone shipments is anticipated to reach 20 million units in 2027, with the second-generation model included.
