Iceland Cricket may not be setting fires on the field but is well known for their big-hitting social media game, and this time the associate nation has gone head-to-head with one of cricket's ‘Big Boys' and come out on top.

The social media-savvy Nordic nation turned a four-year-old legal exchange into a perfectly timed slice of internet humour, just as the Indian Premier League (IPL) frenzy builds back home ahead of the tournament's opener on March 28.

On March 24, Iceland Cricket's social media accounts posted a thread revisiting a 2022 episode when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) objected to their use of the term “IPL” for their domestic T20 competition, named “Icelandic Premier League.”

The Trademark Tussle

Iceland Cricket admitted that they made the ‘mistake' of advertising their tournament as the Icelandic Premier League (IPL). That, unsurprisingly, didn't go down well with the custodians of the multi-billion-dollar Indian Premier League brand.

According to the screenshots shared online, BCCI's legal representatives sent an email dated April 17, 2022, asking Iceland Cricket to “suitably amend” their promotional material and remove references to “IPL,” citing trademark concerns.

What followed is where the story veers from standard legal fare into Iceland Cricket territory.

The ‘Solution'

Faced with what they described as two options, “fight the most powerful cricket board in the world” or “give in”, Iceland Cricket chose the latter. They tweaked the name to Íslensk Premier League (ÍPL), simply adding an accent to the “I”.

“Once it became the ÍPL, they never emailed us again,” the board wrote in their latest thread, before declaring that their competition is now “the world's most popular T20 franchise tournament in the sub-Arctic.”

An undisputed claim for sure.

Why It's Viral Now

While the exchange dates back to 2022, the timing of the post is doing much of the heavy lifting. With IPL 2026 around the corner, Iceland Cricket's flashback has landed squarely in the middle of peak cricket chatter.

The result has been a fresh wave of engagement, with fans leaning into the absurdity of the situation. One user said that with more polar bears, fewer billionaires and 100% less litigation, the ÍPL remains the 'superior league'.

In a Star Wars-themed post, another user made an astute observation.

While another paid tribute to them always bringing their A-game on X.
