Morocco moved to the top of Group C with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Scotland at Boston Stadium on Friday, thanks to Ismael Saibari's lightning-quick strike after just 71 seconds. The PSV Eindhoven midfielder's early effort stands as the fastest goal of FIFA World Cup 2026 so far and proved enough to separate the sides in a tightly contested encounter.
Morocco made a blistering start and caught Scotland cold almost immediately. Brahim DÃaz combined cleverly down the right flank before picking out Saibari, who met the pass with a first-time volley that flew beyond Angus Gunn and into the back of the net.
The early breakthrough perfectly suited Mohamed Ouahbi's game plan. Morocco dropped into a disciplined mid-block and focused on closing central passing lanes, forcing Scotland to go wide in their search for openings. The Atlas Lions remained dangerous on the counter, with Achraf Hakimi and Noussair Mazraoui providing outlets whenever possession was regained.
Scotland struggled to recover from the early setback and found it difficult to create clear chances during the first half. Morocco's defensive discipline frustrated Steve Clarke's side.

The Tartan Army emerged with greater urgency after the break and thought they had a strong penalty claim in the 50th minute when John McGinn went down under pressure inside the box. However, the referee waved play on and a subsequent VAR check upheld the decision.
Morocco nearly doubled their advantage moments later. Saibari reacted quickest to a loose ball in the area and struck a powerful effort that took a deflection and crashed against the crossbar, denying him a second goal of the evening.
As time ticked away, Scotland became increasingly direct in their approach. The introductions of Lyndon Dykes and Ben Gannon-Doak shifted the focus towards aerial deliveries and physical battles inside the penalty area, forcing Morocco deeper into their own half.
The Scots came closest to an equaliser in the closing stages. Scott McTominay drove a powerful effort into the side-netting before Dykes headed narrowly wide from a corner as Morocco survived a late barrage to preserve their clean sheet.
The victory fires Morocco to the top of Group C with four points from two matches and within touching distance of the Round of 32. Scotland remain second on three points, although the standings could change depending on the result of Brazil's clash with Haiti later in the matchday.
Morocco will conclude their group-stage campaign against Haiti, knowing that a win or draw will guarantee qualification for the knockout rounds. Scotland, meanwhile, face a decisive final fixture against Brazil, with their hopes of progression still firmly in their own hands. The final Group C fixtures will take place on June 25, at 3:30 AM IST.
