The deadline to apply for benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana—the Centre's flagship affordable housing scheme—has been extended till December 2025.

Launched in 2015, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is designed to provide first-time homebuyers access to affordable housing. The scheme is aimed at providing pucca houses to the eligible beneficiaries from the underprivileged sections in both urban and rural areas, including lower income groups (LIG) and economically weaker sections (EWS).

According to official figures, more than 92.61 lakh homes have been built so far under the scheme. PMAY Urban (PMAY-U) and PMAY Gramin (PMAY-G) are the two parts of the programme that serve the urban and rural populations, respectively.

Eligibility for PMAY

PMAY eligibility is based on social background, housing situation and income category of the applicant.

PMAY-Urban (PMAY-U)

To be eligible for PMAY-U, applicants must fall into one of the following category brackets and not already own a pucca house in India:

  • EWS: Annual income up to Rs 3 lakh

  • MIG-I: Annual income between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 9 lakh

  • LIG: Annual income between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 6 lakh

  • Slum dwellers: People who reside in informal communities

The beneficiaries may also include street vendors, rickshaw pullers, daily wage labourers, migrant workers, industrial workers and women from EWS and LIG categories, mainly widows and members of SC, ST, OBC and minority communities.

PMAY-Gramin (PMAY-G)

Rural families found by the socio-economic and caste census (SECC) that fulfil the following requirements are given preference for PMAY-Gramin:

  • Do not own a house

  • Live in kutcha homes that have at least two rooms

Families with cars, pucca houses, or mechanised farming equipment, as well as those with refrigerators, big landholdings, taxable income, or other assets, are not eligible.
