PM Modi said Manmohan Singh has left a strong imprint on India's economic policy over the years. India has lost a visionary statesman, said Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi led the nation in sharing condolences after former PM Manmohan Singh passed away at the age of 92. His demise was confirmed shortly after he was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi on Thursday night.

Singh was admitted to AIIMS Delhi in the evening after his health deteriorated. The veteran Congress leader was brought to the emergency department of the hospital.

"India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist," PM Modi said in a post on social media platform X.

"He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives," Modi, who succeeded Singh as Prime Minister in 2014, said.

President Murmu said the former PM made critical contributions to reforming Indian economy and will always be remembered for his service to the nation, unblemished political life and his utmost humility.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said history will undoubtedly judge the former PM kindly, a veiled reference to Singh's infamous "history will judge me kindly than the media" comment.

"I have lost a mentor and guide. Millions of us who admired him will remember him with the utmost pride," said Rahul Gandhi.

The Congress leader made his electoral debut in 2004 Lok Sabha elections, when the UPA came to power and appointed Manmohan Singh as PM.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who served as a minister in the Manmohan Singh cabinet, said the country will miss his stewardship.

"I had worked with him and saw him from very close quarters in the Union Cabinet. His erudition and wisdom were unquestionable, and the depth of the financial reforms ushered in by him in the country are widely acknowledged . The country will miss his stewardship and I shall miss his affection," the CM said.

The  Chief Minister of Maharashtra shared his condolences on X. "His contributions in Indian economic reforms, serving our Nation as PM for 10 years, will be remembered forever," he said.
