West Bengal Weather Update: Kalbaisakhi Warning Issued In 5 Districts Of Bengal
Residents of West Bengal, particularly in the southern districts, can expect some relief from the heat as the meteorological department forecasts Kalbaishakhi across the region starting today.

Kalbaisakhi Alert: People of West Bengal, particularly in South Bengal, may soon get some relief from the scorching heat as the regional meteorological department has issued an alert for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms due to an incoming Nor’wester, or Kalbaisakhi, as it is known in Bengali. The seasonal weather phenomenon, known for bringing intense storms, gusty winds and lightning, is expected to impact several districts from Mar. 20 to 22.
Nor’wester To Bring Strong Winds And Rain
The Alipore Meteorological Department has predicted thunderstorms with lightning, moderate to heavy rainfall and strong winds across West Bengal. The storm is expected to develop in phases, gradually intensifying over the next few days.
Mar. 20: Severe thunderstorms with wind speeds of 50 to 60 kmph, hail and heavy rain are likely to affect Jhargram, Bankura, West Midnapore, East Midnapore and Hooghly districts. The remaining districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata, may experience thunderstorms with winds of 40 to 50 kmph.
Mar. 21: The impact of the storm will extend to East Bardhaman and Howrah, alongside the other affected districts, with similar wind speeds and hailstorms expected.
Mar. 22: The Nor’wester is likely to shift towards North Bengal, with Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia and East Bardhaman experiencing winds of 40 to 50 kmph and thunderstorms. Light to moderate rainfall is also predicted for North and South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore.
Meanwhile, in North Bengal, thunderstorms with 30 to 40 kmph wind speeds are likely on Mar. 21, intensifying to 40 to 50 kmph on Mar. 22 in Malda, South Dinajpur and Alipurduar.
Fishermen Advised To Stay Away From The Sea
The weather department has also issued a fisherman warning, stating that squalls reaching 50 to 60 kmph may prevail along and off the West Bengal coast on Mar. 20 and 21. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea during this period due to high waves and rough sea conditions.
Possible Impacts Of The Nor’wester
The storm could cause significant disruptions, including damage to standing crops, vegetables and horticulture, posing a threat to farmers. Lightning strikes in open fields may increase risks for those outdoors, while strong winds could weaken or destroy fragile structures. Urban areas may face traffic disruptions due to waterlogging, fallen trees and reduced visibility.
Safety Measures For Residents
Authorities have issued several precautionary measures to minimise risks during the storm. Residents have been advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking refuge under trees or electrical poles to reduce the risk of lightning strikes. They should also avoid contact with water bodies during lightning to prevent electrocution hazards.
Traffic movement should be regulated carefully to prevent accidents caused by slippery roads and poor visibility.
As West Bengal braces for stormy weather, residents need to stay updated on weather alerts and follow safety guidelines. Though the Nor’wester will offer temporary relief from the sweltering heat, it’s a;sp likely to cause disruptions across the state.
