FASTag Annual Toll Pass: How Much Will It Cost? What We Know So Far
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is reportedly planning a dual-payment toll system. Under this, users can choose between a yearly pass, or pay based on the distance travelled.

Vehicle owners can soon expect new changes on the use of FASTag as the government is reportedly planning to introduce an annual pass system to streamline the toll tax collection. A report has highlighted that the new toll policy may offer a FASTag Annual Pass for Rs 3,000 per year.
This pass would allow unlimited travel on national highways and expressways, aiming to make road travel more seamless and economical for commuters, according to a May 24 report by the Times of India.
Govt May Introduce Two Payment Options
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is reportedly planning a dual-payment toll system. Under this, users can choose between a yearly pass, or pay based on the distance travelled.
This means that vehicle owners can either choose the annual pass worth Rs 3,000 as a one-time payment scheme or go for distance-based pricing as per their needs. The annual pass would be more convenient for users who frequently travel across all national highways, state highways and expressways. This system will allow them to have greater flexibility over their travel journeys without incurring additional toll charges for an entire year.
On the other hand, a distance-based pricing mechanism is ideal for vehicle owners who do not travel as frequently. Under this system, the government is planning a flat toll of Rs 50 per 100 km. This could replace the current toll fee structure.
Will You Need To Change Account For Annual FASTag Pass?
The ministry plans to make this transition smooth, without troubling the people with factors like account changes. The TOI report stated that the new policy will not require any new documents and existing FASTag users can simply opt into the updated system using their current accounts.
Notably, the government has reportedly dropped an earlier plan for a lifetime FASTag. The earlier proposal suggested a lifetime FASTag costing Rs 30,000 for 15 years.
To be clear, this policy is still under consideration. The government is also planning other reforms in the toll collection system, including the introduction of barrier-free systems. Physical toll plazas will gradually be phased out, allowing vehicles to pass through without stopping. This will be possible with the help of technologies like the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system.
