COVID-19: India Records 378 Fresh Cases; Active Infections Climb To 6,133

Kerala remains the most affected state, with 1,950 active cases currently under monitoring.

India recorded a rise in COVID-19 cases, with 378 new infections reported in the past 24 hours, according to the data released by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at 8 a.m. on June 9.

The total number of active cases in the country has now reached 6,133.

Kerala Tops Active Case Count

Kerala remains the most affected state, with 1,950 active cases currently under monitoring. The state registered 144 new infections in the last 24 hours. Gujarat follows with 822 active cases, having reported 105 new cases in a single day.

West Bengal, Delhi and Maharashtra round out the top five, with 693, 686 and 595 active cases, respectively. Daily increases stood at 71 in West Bengal, 21 in Delhi and 18 in Maharashtra.

Cases In Other States

Several other states also witnessed a rise in fresh COVID-19 cases. Haryana's total active case count reached 102, with 15 new cases reported in one day. Rajasthan logged 24 fresh infections in the past one day, taking its active caseload to 132.

Karnataka, meanwhile, experienced a dip in numbers. With a reduction of 78 cases from the previous day, the state’s current active count stands at 366.

Tamil Nadu reported 194 active cases, with no new additions in the past 24 hours. Uttar Pradesh’s tally rose to 219, following 11 new cases in one day.

Deaths Reported In Four States

Six deaths linked to COVID-19 were recorded in the past one day. Karnataka reported two deaths — men aged 46 and 78. Kerala saw three deaths, all males aged 51, 64 and 92. Tamil Nadu confirmed one fatality, a 42-year-old man.

Review Meetings To Assess Preparedness

To assess the COVID-19 situation and strengthen the country’s readiness, a series of high-level technical review meetings were convened on June 2 and 3. The sessions were chaired by Dr Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services. The participants included officials from the Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response Cell, National Centre for Disease Control, Indian Council of Medical Research and Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme. Representatives from central government hospitals in Delhi and health authorities from all states and Union Territories were also present.

As per reports, according to official sources on June 4, state and district-level surveillance teams under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme are maintaining close watch on cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI), which are being used as early indicators for any emerging outbreaks.
