Stock Market Today: Nifty, Sensex End At Lowest Level Since June Rout

Intraday, the NSE Nifty 50 declined 1.58% to 22,976.8, and the S&P BSE Sensex fell 1.86% to 75,641.8.

Asian stocks advanced on Tuesday after US President Donald Trump resisted imposing any trade tariff in his inaugural speech while promising a “golden age” for America. However, India's benchmark stares at a weaker start. The GIFT Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50 Index’s performance in India, was down 64.5 points or 0.27%, at 23,419.5 as of 7:48 a.m.

Closing Bell: Nifty, Sensex Close With Over 1% Fall

Indian benchmark indices extended the selloff on Tuesday to close at the lowest level since the June crash as uncertainty around US President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs spooked investors.

The session swung between gains and losses to fall past 1.5% led by a selloff in reality and energy stocks. Zomato plunged 13% while Dixon Technologies tumbled 14% during the day on weak third-quarter earnings.

The S&P BSE Sensex Index closed 1,235 points, or 1.6%, at 75,838 while the NSE Nifty 50 was 320 points or 1.37% lower at 23,024. Intraday, the NSE Nifty 50 declined 1.58% to 22,976.8, and the S&P BSE Sensex fell 1.86% to 75,641.8.

Trump initially opted against announcing any new levies but the dollar later rose on reports that he plans to impose threatened tariffs of as much as 25% on Canadian and Mexican imports as soon as Feb. 1. Following this, Asian stocks gave up early gains.

ICICI Bank Ltd., Reliance Industries Ltd., Trent Ltd., State Bank of India, and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. contributed to the fall in Nifty 50.

Apollo Hospitals Ltd., HCL Technologies Ltd., Tata Consumers Ltd. BPCL Ltd., and UltraTech Cements Ltd. added gains to the benchmark index.

On NSE, all 12 ended in negative. Nifty Realty led the fall with a fall of over 4% followed by the PSU Energy index. PSU Banks and Finance fell over 1.5% while Nifty Auto tumbled 1.6%. Nifty FMCG declined the least.

On BSE, all 21 sectors ended in red with the BSE Realty emerging as the top loser.

Broader markets underperformed benchmark indices. The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices ended 2.00% and 1.94% down, respectively.

Market breadth was skewed in favour of sellers. Around 2,744 stocks declined, 1,200 stocks advanced, and 114 stocks remained unchanged on BSE.

ICICI Bank Ltd., Reliance Industries Ltd., HDFC Bank Ltd., State Bank of India, and Trent Ltd. contributed to the fall in Nifty 50.

Apollo Hospitals Ltd., JSW Steel Ltd., UltraTech Cements Ltd., BPCL Ltd., and Tata Consumers Ltd. added gains to the benchmark index.

Indian benchmark indices extended the selloff on Tuesdays and are poised to close at the lowest level since the June crash. Selloff in Oil and Gas stocks and banks led the declines in the benchmark index.
