Maharashtra is gearing up to celebrate Gudi Padwa on March 19, the annual spring festival marking the start of the new year for Marathi and Konkani Hindus. Every year, Gudi Padwa is celebrated with much pomp and show across Maharashtra and Goa.

On this day, families celebrate the occasion by preparing feasts, wearing new clothes, exchanging gifts and hoisting a traditional Gudi flag. "Gudi" refers to the flag, while "Padwa" comes from the Sanskrit word pratipada, meaning the first day of a lunar fortnight.

To mark the day, a public holiday is declared in Maharashtra and Goa to allow people to celebrate the festival with their friends and families. As a result, schools, colleges, banks, government offices, post offices and other institutions remain closed on this day.

This has led to confusion among investors if the holiday is also applicable to NSE and BSE, both of which are based in Mumbai.
