Domestic equity markets will remain open on Thursday, Feb. 19, but there will be no settlement-related activities due to a clearing holiday on account of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti.
All transactions in both cash and futures and options (F&O) on Feb. 18 and Feb. 19 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the BSE will be settled and reflected in the demat accounts of investors and traders on Feb. 20.
As per the NSE holiday calendar, Feb. 19 is a clearing holiday for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti.
A clearing holiday or settlement holiday is a day when stock markets remain open for trading, but settlements are paused due to the closure of banks and clearing houses. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti is a public holiday in Maharashtra and banks will remain closed across the state on this day.
Settlements to be delayed
Stock exchanges usually declare clearing holidays due to bank holidays or state-specific public holidays. The closure of banks, the clearing corporation (NSE Clearing Ltd.) and the central depositories (NSDL and CDSL) due to public holidays impacts the settlement of stock transactions.
On a settlement holiday, investors and traders can buy and sell shares, but the transfer of funds and securities will be delayed to the next working day. For all transactions on Feb. 18 and Feb. 19, shares will not be delivered to demat accounts, and funds will not be deducted until the next working day. Settlement updates for transactions will be available on Feb. 20.
