HDFC Bank's succession process has moved into its final stretch, with the lender sending two names to the Reserve Bank of India for approval for its next managing director and CEO. The choice has become a key near-term catalyst for HDFC Bank shares, with brokerages differing on which route could deliver the stronger rerating.

People familiar with the matter said Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha is the internal candidate, while ICICI Prudential Life Insurance MD & CEO Anup Bagchi is the external choice. The RBI is expected to decide within the next 7–10 days, according to the people cited. The bank has not officially disclosed the names of the candidates. It has, however, confirmed that two candidates have been submitted for a three-year term.

Nomura retained its Buy rating with a target price of Rs 950, saying the leadership transition is the more important near-term catalyst. It sees an internal appointment as initially positive because it would remove succession uncertainty and provide continuity.

Jefferies, which also maintained Buy with a Rs 880 target, said the bank is moving quickly on the appointment after proposing two candidates. It sees the addition of a fourth executive director role as strengthening oversight and succession planning.
