Actor-politician Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, has made a mega debut in electoral politics, leading in 107 seats in Tamil Nadu. The counting of votes continues. The AIADMK-led alliance is ahead in 75 seats, while the ruling DMK alliance is in third place with 49 seats.
If these trends continue, Vijay could be heading for a big moment in politics. His rise is already being compared to iconic figures such as M.G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa who made a successful transition from cinema to politics and later led Tamil Nadu.
Vijay's current lead is notable because it comes despite multiple controversies in recent months. One of the biggest incidents was the tragic stampede that took place in September 2025 during a TVK rally in Karur. The incident left 41 people dead and more than 60 injured.

Following the tragedy, the case was transferred to the CBI after an order by the Supreme Court. The agency has since been collecting evidence related to the incident, which remains under investigation.
Vijay is also facing issues with his upcoming movie, Jana Nayagan, which has been caught in delays due to certification problems linked to legal disputes with the CBFC.
The film was also reportedly leaked online in April that sparked strong reactions within the film industry.
Rajinikanth reacted strongly and called the incident "shocking and painful.” Suriya also expressed concern, saying the situation was "heartbreaking and unfair" and appealed to audiences to avoid pirated content. Voices like Chiranjeevi, Sivakarthikeyan and Kamal Haasan joined in, asking for stricter action and accountability.
Even with these challenges, work on the film has continued without pause. Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth and backed by KVN Productions, features Vijay along with Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol and Mamitha Baiju.
After facing delays, certification hurdles and the leak issue, the film is now expected to hit theatres worldwide on May 8, 2026. The announcement has brought back strong buzz around the project.
The film is also being closely watched because it may be Vijay's last before he fully commits to politics through his party, TVK. If the current election trends turn into a clear win, it could be a defining moment in his political journey. At the same time, that momentum is likely to help in the film's box office performance as well.
