The Bharatiya Janata Party is dominating two out of the four states that have their results today. The party is heading towards a historic victory in West Bengal, and is way past the majority mark in Assam.
In case of a victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will likely address his party workers in the evening at around 7 p.m, as per NDTV reports on Monday.
So far, the party has bagged 78 out of 126 seats with incumbent Himanta Biswa Sarma leading the charge in Assam, while Suvendhu Adhikari has total of 182 seats in West Bengal.
State Assembly Elections 2026
Counting of votes for the 2026 Assembly elections is underway across five politically crucial states—West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry—setting the stage for a day that could significantly redraw India's political map. With 823 seats in play, the spotlight is firmly on whether incumbents can hold their ground or if voters deliver a decisive shift.
West Bengal remains the marquee battle, where the BJP is seeking to break a decade-long deadlock against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. A high-pitched campaign marked by sharp political rhetoric, allegations and complex electoral issues has made this contest one of the most closely watched. Exit polls had already projected an edge for the BJP, and the numbers so far are reiterating those predictions.
In the latest development, however, Mamata Banerjee has requested workers and party members to not leave the counting stations as she alleged malpractice in counting. She claimed that TMC's votes will come after sundown, and everyone should wait and watch.
