Voting for the second phase of Lok Sabha elections has begun 89 seats in 13 states on Friday. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor are in the fray this time. BJP's Hema Malini and Om Birla are also contesting in this phase. Votes will be cast for 1,206 candidates in this phase.

Lok Sabha Phase 2: Polling Dips Below 2019 Level

The polling in the second phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in 88 seats across 13 states on Friday dipped from 70% in the last general election to 61%. The turnout was higher in Tripura, Manipur, Bengal and Assam while it lagged in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

The phase had 15.88 crore electors across constituencies taking the call on 1,202 candidates in the fray.

The provisional total average turnout in 88 seats in 13 states on Friday was 61%. The turnout was higher in Tripura, Manipur, Bengal and Assam while it lagged in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

This Karnataka Hamlet Had 100% Voting

Banjarumale, an interior hamlet in Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannda district, recorded 100% voting in the Lok Sabha election on Friday. This hamlet has 111 voters and each one of them turned up at the only polling booth, completing voting two hours before polling ended at 6 pm.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar Could Not Vote In Bengaluru

The BJP candidate in Thiruvananthapuram Rajeev Chandrasekhar, is not voting on polling day. He said he could not transfer his vote from Karnataka’s Bengaluru, where he resides, to Kerala on time.

"I am sad, and regret that I could not go to Bengaluru to vote where I have been voting for years, but my priority is to be here,” Rajeev Chandrasekhar said, as per reports.

Tripura: Poll Boycott Call In Tribal Village

More than 600 voters of a remote tribal village in Dhalai district, part of Tripura East Lok Sabha constituency, abstained from voting on Friday due to the unrepaired condition of a 7-km village road, an election official said.

The villagers, numbering around 900, have been persistently demanding repairs for months, emphasising the road's critical importance to their community. The villagers are standing outside the polling booth but not entering it to cast their votes as they are protesting against government apathy.

Poll Boycott Call In Maharashtra Village

Residents of a village in the Parbhani Lok Sabha constituency decided to boycott the elections on Friday to protest against the issue of encroachments, prompting the collector to visit the place and appeal to them. Polling in Hingoli, Nanded and Parbhani constituencies in Marathwada began on Friday morning.

The village, which has 1,200 voters, boycotted the elections over the longstanding issue of encroachments.

DK Shivakumar Says Congress Winning Big In Karnataka

Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar expressed confidence of winning elections in the state, saying Congress has implemente all the promises that were made during state elections last year.

One-third of the candidates contesting the second phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections have declared assets of at least Rs 1 crore, according to analysis done by the non-profit Association for Democratic Reforms.

Out of the 1,192 candidates, 390 are 'crorepatis'. Among them, 140 candidates have wealth of Rs 5 crore and above, while 112 are worth between Rs 2 crore and Rs 5 crore. The average asset per candidate contesting the April 26 elections is Rs 5.17 crore.

Heat Wave Predictions Ahead Of Second Phase

The India Meteorological Department warned of heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in parts of West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh during the next five days. The warning came a day before 89 seats in 13 states go to polls on Friday

The weather department has issued a red warning for West Bengal and Odisha and an orange alert for Bihar and parts of Karnataka. High humidity could add to people's inconvenience in Tripura, Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Assam, Meghalaya and Goa, it said.
