Lok Sabha Election 2024 Live: Provisional Turnout At 61%; Manipur, Tripura Lead Polling While UP, Bihar Lag

The polling in the second phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in 88 seats across 13 states on Friday dipped from 70% in the last general election to 61%. The turnout was higher in Tripura, Manipur, Bengal and Assam while it lagged in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

The phase had 15.88 crore electors across constituencies taking the call on 1,202 candidates in the fray.

The provisional total average turnout in 88 seats in 13 states on Friday was 61%. The turnout was higher in Tripura, Manipur, Bengal and Assam while it lagged in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

Banjarumale, an interior hamlet in Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannda district, recorded 100% voting in the Lok Sabha election on Friday. This hamlet has 111 voters and each one of them turned up at the only polling booth, completing voting two hours before polling ended at 6 pm.

The BJP candidate in Thiruvananthapuram Rajeev Chandrasekhar, is not voting on polling day. He said he could not transfer his vote from Karnataka’s Bengaluru, where he resides, to Kerala on time.

"I am sad, and regret that I could not go to Bengaluru to vote where I have been voting for years, but my priority is to be here,” Rajeev Chandrasekhar said, as per reports.

More than 600 voters of a remote tribal village in Dhalai district, part of Tripura East Lok Sabha constituency, abstained from voting on Friday due to the unrepaired condition of a 7-km village road, an election official said.

The villagers, numbering around 900, have been persistently demanding repairs for months, emphasising the road's critical importance to their community. The villagers are standing outside the polling booth but not entering it to cast their votes as they are protesting against government apathy.

Popular actor and film producer Mammootty cast his vote at a polling booth in Kerala’s Ernakulam earlier today.

Residents of a village in the Parbhani Lok Sabha constituency decided to boycott the elections on Friday to protest against the issue of encroachments, prompting the collector to visit the place and appeal to them. Polling in Hingoli, Nanded and Parbhani constituencies in Marathwada began on Friday morning.

The village, which has 1,200 voters, boycotted the elections over the longstanding issue of encroachments.

Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala will see Shashi Tharoor from Congress face Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar from BJP and CPI's Pannyan Raveendran. But BJP hardly has any support in the state, and lost to Congress in the last two general elections as well. Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Tharoor is hoping to retain the Thiruvananthapuram seat for the fourth time.

The total average turnout in 89 seats in 13 states on Friday is 50.3%. The turnout is higher in Tripura, Manipur, Bengal, while it lags in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh.

Rahul Gandhi is the sitting Member of Parliament from Wayanad in Kerala and is seeking re-election. He is pitted against Communist Party of India's Annie Raja and Bharatiya Janata Party's K Surendran. In the 2019 election, Gandhi secured victory by a substantial margin of more than 7 lakh votes against his closest rival—CPI's PP Suneer.

In a video message, Gandhi appealed voters to exercise their franchise saying this election is to protect rights, democracy and constitution. "The Congress party has put forward a revolutionary manifesto that guarantees social justice," he said.

Voting is currently taking place in the remaining areas of the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency under strict security measures. The voting process is happening across 857 polling stations, which cover 13 assembly segments in eight districts.

The initial phase of the elections saw 15 assembly segments of the Outer Manipur seat and 32 assembly segments of the Inner Manipur went to polls on April 19.

The state is voting in its second and last phase today on 14 seats.

Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar expressed confidence of winning elections in the state, saying Congress has implemente all the promises that were made during state elections last year.

“The people of the state are very happy, and it is evident from the voters' turnout. BJP has failed, we will win in the state with a thumping majority,” he said, reported PTI.

Fourteen of Karnataka's 28 seats are voting today, including all seats in the Bengaluru region.

Overall voter turnout in 89 seats across 13 states stood at 39.1% by 1:00 p.m. Tripura and Chhattisgarh continued to lead among states at 54.5% and 53.1%, respectively. Kerala, where Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor are in fray, recorded 39.3% voting.

Voter turnout till 11:00 a.m. stood at 25.1%, according to data from Election Commission of India. Tripura was leading with 36.4% and Chhattisgarh at 35.5%. Kerala logged 25.6% voting percentage.

The India Meteorological Department warned of heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in parts of West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh during the next five days. The warning came a day before 89 seats in 13 states go to polls on Friday

The weather department has issued a red warning for West Bengal and Odisha and an orange alert for Bihar and parts of Karnataka. High humidity could add to people's inconvenience in Tripura, Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Assam, Meghalaya and Goa, it said.
