The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for parts of south Bengal, forecasting thunderstorms with light to moderate rainfall, hailstorms, and gusty winds in some districts on Feb. 20. This is due to a trough extending from Gangetic West Bengal to Telangana, coupled with strong moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal at lower tropospheric levels.

The IMD has predicted a thunderstorm with wind speeds of 50-60 km/h, along with lightning, hail, and light to moderate rain on Feb. 20 in four districts of Bengal: Bankura, East Burdwan, West Midnapore, and Hooghly. All four districts have been placed on a red alert.

Further, light to moderate rainfall and gusty wind are expected at some places in West Burdwan, Howrah, Kolkata, South 24 Parganas and the rest of the South Bengal districts on Feb. 20. An orange alert has been issued for these districts.

Purulia, Birbhum, and Murshidabad are on a yellow alert for the day, likely to get light to moderate rainfall at a few places.
