Allahabad High Court judge, Justice Yashwant Varma has submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu.His resignation comes amid an impeachment process to remove him.after a huge amount of cash was found at his Delhi residence last year, according to a report by NDTV.
"While I do not propose to burden your august office with the reasons which have constrained me to submit this missive, it is with deep anguish that I hereby tender my resignation from the office of Judge of Hon'ble High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, with immediate effect," the report quoted his letter.
Due to Justice Varma's resignation, the impeachment proceedings to remove him as high court judge will end, people aware of the development told the news portal.
The impeachment proceedings are linked to the receovery of a huge stash of cash from Justice Varma's official residence in Lutyens Delhi on March 14, 2025, when he was serving as a judge at Delhi High Court. Burnt cash was allegedly recovered the storeroom of his residence near the servants' quarters.
Following the incident, the court took away judicial work from Justice Varma at the Delhi High Court and transferred him to his parent Allahabad High Court, while its Chief Justice was directed to not assign any judicial work to him.
The Supreme Court formed a three-judge committee was formed a week later to conduct an in-house inquiry in the issue. A panel of three judges submitted the report to then chief justice Sanjiv Khanna on May 4.
In an unusual development, the court also uploaded photos and videos of cash allegedly recovered of Justice Varma's residence. However, he denied keeping cash in the storeroom and said the room was accessible to all.
