Clashes have again erupted between BJP and TMC workers, this time in Cooch Behar's Dinhata city during the counting of votes across West Bengal, reports said.
This came amid the trends indicating a BJP sweep in Bengal, with the saffron party ahead in 194 out of the state's 294 constituencies. The ruling TMC is trailing, with leads on seats so far.
Earlier, on Saturday, violent clashes broke out between TMC and BJP workers during the re-election in the South 24 Parganas district of Bengal. Voters had alleged that a local TMC leader had threatened and intimidated them in places like Falta and Magrahat West.
As per local reports, workers from both parties threw bricks and stones and used sticks during the clashes in Dinhata and close to the SDO office in Cooch Behar today, following which the deployed security personnel belonging to the Central Reserve Police Forces resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the mob.
There have been reports of vandalism in the Asansol area of West Bengal, according to local reports.
"In Asansol, a political party's camp was vandalised; the perpetrators are being identified and will face charges," said a police official while talking to the press.
The two-phase West Bengal Assembly elections concluded on Saturday, May 2, with ECI recording the state's highest-ever voter turnout of 92.84%. This created exciting anticipation ahead of the results announcement on Monday, May 4.
Largely, the West Bengal 2026 elections are regarded as the most peaceful elections in two decades, with zero deaths recorded related to the overall poll violence this year.
