Maruti Suzuki In Talks Other States To Replicate Uttar Pradesh's Hybrid Car Incentives: RC Bhargava

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. is in discussions with the central and some state governments to replicate Uttar Pradesh's hybrid car incentives, its Chairman RC Bhargava said.

"We are continuing to discuss with the central government and some state governments that there is an alternative to only electric vehicles which we must look at," Bhargava told NDTV Profit in a televised interview. "It is important to promote technology other than electric vehicles because EVs alone can't do the job."

The statement from Bhargava comes after NDTV Profit reported that the Uttar Pradesh government decided to give a 100% waiver on the registration fee of strong hybrid cars and plug-in hybrid cars with immediate effect, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

"The Uttar Pradesh government has been proactive and smart to realise the country's need to achieve its net-zero objectives," Bhargava said.

The Maruti Suzuki chairperson said the nation wants to reduce pollution levels, meet zero-carbon credit goals, and reduce its dependence on imported oil, pointing out that the policy of EVs was brought in with this objective.

But even as EVs are becoming more popular and entering the buying consideration of customers, Bhargava said internal-combustion-engine vehicles are still being purchased in large numbers.

To reduce pollution and greenhouse gas levels, technologies should be adopted in addition to EVs, he said. "The use of hybrids, CNG, and biofuels is the means to do that."
