Mumbai Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Date, Seats, Constituencies, Total Voters And More

The six constituencies in Mumbai and seven others in Maharashtra will go to polls in the fifth phase of general elections on May 20.

Mumbai, along with 13 seats in Maharashtra will go to polls in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 on May 20. Mumbai accounts for six seats and the adjoining Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) has four seats.

All the six Parliamentary constituencies will vote on May 20 in the fifth phase of elections, the last in Maharashtra. The constituencies are:

  • Mumbai South

  • Mumbai North

  • Mumbai North Central

  • Mumbai South Central

  • Mumbai North East

  • Mumbai North West

MMR Constituencies

  • Thane

  • Kalyan

  • Bhiwandi

  • Palghar

Mumbai Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Parties and Alliances

Battle lines have been drawn in six parliamentary constituencies in Mumbai, where Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) will battle it out in three seats.

While two seats will witness fights between the traditional rivals - the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, in one seat the Shiv Sena (UBT) and BJP will fight it out.  

This will be the first major electoral test after the political realignment that emerged in 2019.

Mumbai Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Candidates

Mumbai South, Mumbai South-Central and Mumbai North-West will see a fight between the two Senas, while Mumbai North-East will be a BJP versus Shiv Sena (UBT) face-off.

Mumbai South: In Mumbai South, sitting MP Arvind Sawant of the Uddhav Thackeray will take on Yamini Jadhav of the Shinde-led Sena. Jadhav represents the Byculla assembly constituency in Mumbai.  

Mumbai South-Central: Sena (UBT) leader Anil Desai is pitted against Rahul Shewale of the Shinde-led Sena in Mumbai South-Central. While Desai was a Rajya Sabha member till recently, Shewale is a sitting Lok Sabha member.

Mumbai North-West: Amol Kirtikar of the Thackeray camp will take on Ravindra Waikar of the ruling Sena in Mumbai North-West. Waikar who was earlier with the Sena (UBT), joined the Shinde camp recently. He currently represents Jogeshwari East assembly constituency in Mumbai.  

Mumbai North-Central: Congress MLA Varsha Gaikwad, who is the party's Mumbai unit president, will fight it out against noted lawyer, Ujjwal Nikam, fielded by the BJP in Mumbai North-Central.

Gaikwad represents the Dharavi assembly segment in Mumbai. It will be the first time Thackeray will vote for a Congress candidate as his residence in Bandra comes under the Mumbai North-Central constituency. 

Mumbai North: Union minister and BJP veteran Piyush Goyal will take on Bhushan Patil of the Congress. While Goyal's candidature was announced in March, Patil was declared the Congress candidate just a few days before the last date for filing of nomination.

Mumbai North-East: BJP's Mihir Kotecha will fight against Sena UBT's Sanjay Dina Patil. Kotecha is the MLA from Mulund assembly constituency in Mumbai.

Mumbai Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Number Of Voters

Mumbai is divided into Mumbai city and Mumbai suburban district. Mumbai South and Mumbai South-Central constituencies are in Mumbai city, while the rest of the constituencies are in Mumbai suburban. Mumbai city has over 24 lakh voters, while suburban has 74 lakh voters.

Mumbai Police Guidelines on Voting Day

Mumbai police have issued guidelines restricting assembly of people within 100 metres from polling stations for all six Lok Sabha constituencies which will vote in the fifth phase on May 20. As per the guidelines, the entry of those persons not related to elections will not be allowed in the vicinity of polling stations from 6 am till May 20 midnight.

Only those persons, including candidates or the accredited agents of candidates or officials on poll duty or a public servant engaged in duty at or in the vicinity of such polling station, shall be allowed.

Discount On Metro Train Tickets

The Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) has announced a 10% discount on tickets for commuters on May 20. As per a release issued by the MMMOCL, passengers travelling on Metro line 2A and line 7 can avail of a 10% discount on polling day.

The MMMOCL operates metro line 2A between Andheri (west) and Dahisar (east) and line 7 between Dahisar (east) and Andheri (east). The initiative is aimed at boosting voter turnout through the systematic voter education and electoral participation (SVEEP) programme to encourage Metro commuters to fulfill their civic duty and vote in elections, the release stated.

Commuters using Mumbai One cards, paper QR and paper tickets to travel to polling stations can avail of the 10% discount on the base fare on their return journey after voting, it said.
