Mahagathbandhan Faces Crushing Defeat

Mahagathbandhan's hopes of a comeback in Bihar took a nosedive, as the BJP-JD(U)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) retained power with a landslide mandate. The coalition has won 202 out of the 243 seats.

The Mahagathbandhan, on the other hand, has been restricted to only 35 seats. This marks a dramatic fall from the 2020 election, when the opposition alliance had won 114 seats.

The extent of the RJD’s setback is particularly stark. The party has won only 25 seats, which is only a third as compared to the 75 seats it won in 2020.

The Congress, too, has delivered one of its weakest performances in the state. Contesting 61 seats this time, the party won only six. Its performance had been poorer than 2020, when it won 19 of the 70 seats allotted to it.

Bihar Result 'Surprising', Election Not Fair From Beginning: Rahul Gandhi

"I express my heartfelt gratitude to those millions of voters in Bihar who expressed their trust in the Mahagathbandhan. This result in Bihar is truly surprising. We could not achieve victory in an election that was not fair from the very beginning," Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said.

"This fight is for the protection of the Constitution and democracy. The Congress party and the INDIA alliance will deeply review this result and make their efforts to save democracy even more effective," he added.

Bihar Election Results LIVE: AIMIM Sweeps Seemanchal Again; Tally Neck-And-Neck With Congress

Telangana-based All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen or AIMIM has exceeded expectations in Bihar legislative assembly elections after bagging five seats in the Seemanchal region of the state.

In 2020 elections as well, the party had won five seats. After their 2020 victory, four out of the five elected MLAs had defected to the Rashtriya Janata Dal. Only state President of the party, Akhtarul Iman stayed in AIMIM. However, none of the sitting MLAs were given tickets by the RJD.

These consecutive victories in the Seemanchal region for a party, that hails from Hyderabad and is essentially alien to much of the Hindi heartland, signify its appeal to the local Muslim population.

The Election Commission officially declared AIMIM as victorious in five constituencies, which is almost neck-and-neck with the tally of Congress, which has won five seats and is ahead in another.
