Uttar Pradesh will implement a two-day work-from-home (WFH) policy for large institutions and industrial units, while pushing for straggered shift timings, NDTV reported, following a labour department meeting on Sunday.

Emphasis will be given on operating different shifts, the report said, while adding that the state would also call for increased usage of public transport to cut down on fuel consumption.

In key tech and industrial areas like Noida, Ghaziabad, and Lucknow, the program is intended to minimise daily fuel use and traffic congestion.

State government agencies are required to hold official meetings, workshops, and seminars virtually. For example, the State Secretariat and Directorates will hold half of their internal meetings remotely.

The state government is aggressively encouraging carpooling, the use of public transportation (such metros and UPSRTC buses), and the adoption of electric automobiles in addition to the WFH campaign.

Modi, while addressing a public gathering in Hyderabad on May 10, appealed to the country to reduce fuel usage in view of the global headwinds.

“Use metros wherever metros are available. Use carpooling to go to places, and use the Railways if you have to transport goods. All of this will reduce dependency on petrol and diesel, and thereby cut the dependence on foreign currency,” he had said, noting that reduced fuel usage would trim the burden on India's foreign exchange reserves.

“We have developed work from home, virtual meetings, video conferencing and many other methods during Covid. We got habituated to it. The need of the hour is to resume those methods,” he added.
