What is the history behind the celebration of Diwali?

The festival marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, the demon king of Lanka and rescuing his wife Sita from captivity. Lord Rama came back to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. He was also an incarnation of Vishnu, who is known as the preserver in Hinduism. That’s why it signifies the victory of good over evil and light over darkness. Diwali has different meanings in different parts of India, but its main message - that good always wins over evil - is universal and uplifting.
